BUILDING A BEAUTY CAREER IN THE NORTH
There’s a common idea that living in a smaller northern community means fewer opportunities — especially for women looking for flexible work, creative careers, or something that fits around raising a family. But for many women, the beauty industry has quietly become one of the most realistic ways to build an income, create independence, and work on their own terms.
For me, it started with wanting more flexibility and creativity in my day-to-day life. Like many moms, I wanted work that could fit around nap times, school schedules, sports, and family life — while still allowing me to build something meaningful for myself. What I didn’t expect was how much demand there would be in northern communities for quality beauty services and training.
Living and working in the north has also shaped the way I teach. I understand the realities of smaller communities, slower seasons, travel, word-of-mouth marketing, and balancing business ownership with family life. Many of our students are moms, women changing careers, or people looking for more flexibility and independence in their schedules.
Over the years, students have continued to choose Nude PMU time and time again from communities all across the north. Many travel in from surrounding towns and rural areas because they want a more supportive, hands-on learning experience that feels approachable and realistic — not intimidating. Our classes are intentionally designed to feel personal, beginner-friendly, and mentorship-focused, with real guidance throughout the process.
One of the biggest advantages of working in beauty in the north is that these services are still incredibly valued. Clients are willing to invest in services that help them feel confident, put together, and low-maintenance in their everyday lives. In many smaller communities, there’s also far less market saturation compared to larger cities, creating incredible opportunities for artists entering the industry.
At Nude PMU, our training goes beyond just learning techniques. We focus on helping students build confidence while learning modern services they can realistically begin offering in their own communities. Alongside hands-on training and live model experience, we also discuss pricing, client communication, social media, and what it actually looks like to start building a clientele in a northern town.
You don’t need years of experience or a perfectly curated social media presence to begin. Many successful artists start with little experience — just a willingness to learn, practice, and stay consistent.
For women in the north, especially moms looking for more flexibility, beauty can become more than just a side hobby. It can become a creative outlet, a source of confidence, and a career that genuinely works alongside your life instead of against it.
